Young Architects in Flanders, publication series
With the Young Architects in Flanders series, the Flemish Architecture Institute provides a forum for promising young architects, urban planners and researchers in Flanders. This generation currently occupies a relevant experimental position in architecture and related disciplines in the region. In their work, architecture assumes a wide variety of forms and expressions. Again and again it is given a new interpretation, sometimes less visible and even unprecedented. They were selected for being unexpected, original and of considerable importance regarding the position of, and critical reflection on, contemporary architecture in Flanders. Each exhibition is presented with a critical review.

35m³ Young Architecture, exhibitions & texts
With 35m³, a project that ran from 2005 to 2008, deSingel and the Flemish Architecture Institute gave young Belgian architects a blank space in which to exhibit their practical work, their approach, their motives and their vision. The title refers to the volume (283 x 408 x 303 cm) inside which, either the current products of a new generation of architects, or their visions on paper were presented. This black monolith, with an interior like a white cube, was installed in the corridors of the international arts campus deSingel. Promising young architects offered a picture of their motivations, their approach and their practice by presenting one or more actual buildings, a statement, a vision, a theoretical reflection or question, an installation or whatever they wished. Critical texts were specially written by young architecture critics.

1 to 1 Architecture, guided visits and texts
In 2009, the VAi organised a number of visits to recently constructed buildings by young designers and coupled these visits to writing assignments for young architecture critics. Acknowledging and discussing the diversity of architectural practices is, after all, the first step in debating architecture and both the designer and the critic have a crucial role to play. 1 to 1 offers young designers and architecture critics a platform to participate in the debate.
