51N4E wins European Prize for Urban Public Space

Last week Brussels-based 51N4E were awarded first prize for Skanderbeg Square in Tirana (Albania).

In addition to 51N4E, several other Belgian offices were also awarded prizes. de vylder vinck taillieu and BAVO received a special mention for their project PC Caritas, a pavilion in a former psychiatric centre in Melle that was saved from demolition and transformed into a peaceful haven for patients, family members and visitors to the public park. The other shortlisted Belgian projects: Monument for an Open Society (ORG Permanent Modernity), Memorial 22/3 (Bureau Bas Smets) and Play Landscape ‘be-MINE’ (OMGEVING landscape architecture and urbanism in association with Carve). Bas Smets and Norwegian firm to design Utoya memorial (NO)

The memorial site for the victims of the terrorist attack on the island of Utoya will be designed by Bureau Bas Smets from Belgium, Manthey Kula and Matthias Ekman from Norway.

OFFICE builds Centre for Traditional Music in Bahrein

In Muharraq, Bahrain, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen was asked to renovate a house that symbolises the musical culture of the pearl fishers, and to turn it into a music centre. The result is a strong  public signal in the city.
