With a lecture and a series of workshops in autumn 2024, VAi and Timelab focus on the challenges of participation in current architectural and urban planning projects in Belgium.
In many architectural and urban projects participation is a tool in the design process. It may be bottom-up with citizen organisations or a mandatory process expected by the authorities. We encounter various levels of citizen engagement and numerous challenges in these processes. Participation in architecture has been under the spotlight since the 1960s, yet the ever-changing social dynamics also altered the position of architecture and the role of architects accordingly. As a result, the discourse on participation remains relevant still in contemporary practices.

Through this series of workshops and a lecture, entitled Participation for Real, VAi and Timelab aim to understand the challenges of participation in architectural and urban planning projects today in Belgium. The main motivation is to gather critical insights and good practices from architects and participation professionals (social workers, people engaged in community management) and explore possible equitable positions that one can take regarding the multi-faceted social dynamics of the 21st century. The series is designed to foster peer-to-peer learning among people who are intensely occupied with participatory projects, as well as to introduce a series of skill sets to younger and/or interested architects and architecture students.
