In the hands of Robbrecht and Daem, the Whitechapel Gallery has not lost its identity as an art centre with roots in the local East End community that has its own view of the world. But that’s not all. The Whitechapel has remained a ‘house’ which, in the first place, revolves around a different concept of architecture. One where the architecture has the chance to remain silent. To refrain from talking the visitor round, and rather to empathically take the visitor into an atmosphere that induces a certain stillness and contemplation, among other things, by the subtle manipulation of light and the creation of new routes and circuits.
