AST 77 developed a 'mansion' on the Anemoonsite in Tienen, the location of the former Provincial Boarding School. The house was designed in line with the criteria of the innovative implementation quality plan for this site, drawn up by B-architects in collaboration with OMGEVING.
The structural base material of the sustainable dwelling designed by AST 77 is earth, combined with steel and concrete. Earth has a very low impact on the environment and has excellent thermal and structural properties. With this in mind, AST 77 wanted to reuse soil mined on site. Together with BC studies, they investigated how the available clay loam soil could be used for construction purposes. This resulted in a 15-metre-high central rammed earth wall, one of the highest non-bonded rammed earth walls in Europe. The earth wall forms the central core of the dwelling. The three freestanding external walls are connected to it with steel plate floors. The 50 cm thick outer walls are brick built on both the inside and the outside. The house has been designed as a 'sustainable bespoke unit'. The outer shell is fixed, but the plan and interpretation are flexible and completely adaptable to the evolving housing needs of current and future residents.
This project was opened on the occasion of the 2017 Day of Architecture.
