Living on the first floor next to the canal creates views over the polders and distant horizons, a sense of openness that we associate with this man-made landscape, but which is disregarded in the closed logic of the residential estates in Oudenburg. With a prominent bay window, a covered terrace that runs through to the side next to the street, and the openness of the plinth in which the office is housed, Ampe and Trybou bring life to the street scene and run counter to the tendency to make street façades completely blank and to turn the private life carried on inside the house away from the public space entirely.
