With this monochrome entrance building, ectv architecten Els Claessens en Tania Vandenbussche used a crisp gesture to structure the Jabbeke recycling centre. The construction is composed as a canopy that shelters the regulated car entrance, and a maintenance building for the centre’s staff. The difference in height between the roof structure and the service building brings in extra daylight under the canopy and grants it a certain airiness. Taking its cue from the appearance of containers, the construction is clad in corrugated metal panels in a matt green hue. The sharp detailing, on the other hand, makes the building stand out from its surroundings. This interplay of referencing the mundane context while offering an autonomous architectural object that stands out renders this everyday service building unpretentiously special.

This project is part of the exhibition Composite Presence in the Belgian pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
ectv architecten Els Claessens en Tania Vandenbussche: "The building program consists of three parts: a service building with checkpoint, refectory, and sanitary facilities; a roof under which entering vehicles are valued; and a shelter for small containers. With its materialization and green colour, the design refers to the typical containers and the slowly sloping gable roof reminds us of the industrial sheds in the area. Due to the diagonal placement of the irregular site, a specially covered outdoor space is created with roof edges that vary in height."
