The building has a very simple programme, was built on a limited budget and stands on an outstanding, but by no means exceptional, site on the boundary between the dunes and the hinterland. Its relevance lies in the way persistent design work in essentially banal circumstances subtly creates an opportunity for architecture.
The simplicity of the requirements — rooms, kitchens, sanitary facilities and storerooms — enabled the architects to reduce the building to a sort of backbone. Three wings containing rooms are added in a zigzag to a single figure that divides the site into four. Because the rooms open to the outside directly or via a short outdoor staircase, the users occupy the sections of territory around the building in a quite natural way.
