A PLAY WITH FAÇADES. The architects conceived an open house that is accessible to all. Their design breaks up the streetscape of closed neoclassical façades. A new staircase creates a distance between the existing façade and the new volumes, whereby the original wall becomes a tangible artefact. The succession of façades, pavilions and enclosed gardens generates a shortcut through the Stationsstraat and the Hogeweg.
This project is part of the exhibition Composite Presence in the Belgian pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
URA Yves Malysse Kiki Verbeeck: "This is a renovation project for a revalidation centre, in the middle of Ninove, a small provincial town in the west of Brussels. The contrast between the specific situation of the formal street façade and the small back street was the starting point of design. The whole project can be seen as a reinterpretation of the typical Flemish condition of building volumes in the back of the plot. In that sense, the project fits perfectly in its landscape. The result is a sequence of spaces, inside and outside, with different materials and different atmospheres. All these conditions are combined by both strong physical and visual connections, in horizontal and vertical ways."
