Back from Japan
In Spring 2020, the Flanders Architecture Institute will be focusing on the link between architecture from Japan and projects from Flanders and Brussels. How is architecture perceived in a changed social and spatial reality? Which elements are retained and what changes does the specific context demand?

RE-PRACTICE RE-VISIT RE-TURN
In autumn 2019, Toto Gallery invited architecten de vylder vinck tallieu to present their work in Tokyo. The Ghent-based practice took advantage of the invitation to carry out research into the similarities and differences in the Japanese and Flemish approach to architecture. In collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Technology they set up a design study; but instead of re-search they named it re-practice. Projects by de vylder vinck tallieu were modelled and reinterpreted in a new context.

RE-PRACTICE RE-VISIT RE-TURN displays the intensive design study carried out by the students in Tokyo: eleven original projects by de vylder vinck tallieu are imbued with fresh meaning in a Japanese context, like eleven Japanese mirror images. For the duration of the exhibition in Tokyo, three other international design studios each worked on eleven projects by designers from Flanders and Brussels, which again culminated in mirror images in three different contexts. The Flanders Architecture Institute is therefore exhibiting forty-four pairings that reinterpret this architecture from Flanders and Brussels in four different social and spatial contexts.
