In August the Flanders Architecture Institute together with Case Design and BC architects & studies organize two workshops of each five intense days as an advanced design/build exercise with a focus on the rammed earth technique.

BC architects & studies (BE) and other lecturers (TBC) will introduce the participants to earth as a contemporary construction material and will reflect upon its relevance in todays global societies. Case Design (IN) on the other hand will introduce to the participants their upcoming project: the Peace Pavillon. Together with BC and Case Design, the participants will design and prototype the formwork and rammed earth 'building blocks' to be used for the construction of the Peace Pavillon. These 'building blocks' will be conceived in such a way that they can also function as design objects or design furniture. The outcome of the workshops will be exhibited in the exhibition Case Design. The Craft of Collaboration at the Flanders Architecture Institute and BC’s participation at the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2019.

Participant profile
The participant should have some practical background and/ or previous experiences with earth and/or wood (workshops, construction,...).

WORKSHOP 1 - ADVANCED RAMMED EARTH WORKSHOP
The aim of the first workshop will be to design and prototype a formwork and rammed earth modular building block that

  • can be used by Case Design in the construction of the peace pavillon in India
  • can function as furniture (stool, table,...) on itself or in combination with multiple/other prototyped blocks

During the five days participants will learn hands-on about designing formwork for rammed earth blocks, prefabrication techniques, retouching, transporting rammed earth elements rammed earth mixes from excavation sites, different finishing techniques such as grinding, polishing, coating, plastering and prototyping and producing their own building block.

WORKSHOP 2 - RAMMED EARTH PRODUCTION WEEK
In a second stage the participants will produce the final prototypes of workshop one on a high level of finishing. The results will be

  • shown at the exhibition Case Design. The Craft of Collaboration at the Flanders Architecture Institute
  • shown at the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2019
  • send digitally to India in order for the formwork to be copied and used in the production all building blocks of the peace pavillon

During the five days participants will learn hands-on about creating a material production line, upscaling earth production, different finishing techniques such as grinding, polishing, coating, plastering from experts and will be able to take their own object home.
