The architecture season 2017 - 2018 is looking very promising. Next to three big and three small exhibitions indoors and two exhibitions on location, the Flanders Architecture Institute also presents the first edition of the Festival of Architecture. Like every season we organize a range of interesting lectures, debates and encounters with architects, urban planners and critics. And of course we have plenty of publications coming out in 2017 and 2018.
Christoph Grafe, director of the Flanders Architecture Insittute:
‘Architecture is more than just building’. Under this heading, the Flanders Architecture Institute and deSingel invite you to the first Festival of Architecture in September 2017. It is undeniably true that architecture is about more than just building. It also encompasses dreams and reflections about urban life, and about spaces that are pleasant to inhabit. Architecture also involves talking about building. This might be a dialogue between makers and designers, or a debate in an empowered civil society about the future of the city. The Festival of Architecture will be kicking off a season in which architecture – in all its guises – is explored and exhibited. We will be introducing you to the sober yet rich work of the architect and monk Dom Hans van der Laan and to the constructive poetry of Coussée & Goris architects. But we will also be showing you virtuoso drawings from internationally renowned architects who in the 1980s were linked to the renowned London Architectural Association School, in addition to studies of cultural establishments over the centuries. For architecture is about more than just building; it is a central part of our culture. It can sometimes be a fragile obstacle, but it is often a strong foundation too.
