Issue 257 of German architecture magazine ARCHI+ focuses on adaptive reuse. The projects ZIN and Peterbos in Brussels by 51N4E and project Verbiest by Agwa in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek are discussed.
This project sees the reuse of the emblematic WTC I and II towers. The project insists radically on reuse, not only by considering the existing building as a material bank but also in the ambition to create a robust building that is future-proofed to adapt flexibly to changing uses.
The project concerns the renovation of a building with 80 social housing units and 4 small commercial spaces, part of a large social housing development from the 1970s. The specific intervention in the structure of the building allows to create a sustainable renovation with great added value at a cost significantly lower than the cost of a new construction.
Agwa transformationed a warehouse of almost 1000sqm built between 1900 and 1970 in Molenbeek into a single family house and a shared arts workshop. The demolition works are very limited. All the structures are maintained, in order to limit the waste and to keep the potentials of the place intact. Reuse of the old tiles, of the roof and of the terraces.
