This book further explores the conference with the same name held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation on March 7 and 8, 2024, in celebration of International Women’s Day.
A lack of (self-)recognition, shaped by cultural and socioeconomic contexts, made it difficult for women during Modernism to establish themselves in a male-dominated field that often marginalized their contributions. The ephemeral nature of interior architecture and its collaborative aspects, frequently overshadowed by male partners, further contributed to this marginalization. This book brings female protagonists from around the world out of obscurity, highlighting their indispensable roles and advocating for diverse narratives that challenge systemic conventions, sexism, and inequality. It also calls for further research into the contexts in which their work was showcased, questioning professional practices, identifying “invisible creators,” and addressing the complexities of entitlement and authorship.
