International Women's Day
The community around the feminist architectural practice

On the occassion of International Women's Day on 8 March the Flanders Architecture Insitute presents a special about the community around feminist design practice.

Today, several projects and organisations in Flanders and Brussels focus on addressing gender gaps in design and architecture. They provide support and resources for women* in the sector and contribute to creating a more inclusive and diverse living environment for all. Projects such as Wiki Women Design and Matrimonydays continue to work on narrowing the gender gap in design history and its resources and archives.

BOOK
Untold Stories. Women Designers in Belgium, 1880-1980
Release 11.03.2025

This book is a companion to the exhibition Untold Stories. Women Designers in Belgium 1880-1980, an initiative of Design Museum Brussels and on show until 13 April. For the first time, the exhibition brings together work by more than 50 female designers and makers who were active in Belgium between 1880 and 1980. The publication highlights women's still mostly unknown and undervalued creativity and innovativeness in various applied arts and design fields. Not only the more famous names pass the review, but also anonymous women who worked behind the scenes in firms, domestic or colonial contexts.

TALK
Women in Architecture
09.03.2025 | 11.00h | KAAP Oostende

On 9 March architectural historian Lara Schrijver talks to architect Apolline Vranken and visual artist Valentina Medda, whose project Cities by Night** will be on showcase in Ostend from December 2025.

The characteristics of 'the great architects': boldness, independence, wit and vigour are still seen as typically male qualities. Even though historical research has shown that famous male architects also owed this position of 'the great architect' to other factors, such as family relationships, social conventions and social conditions. In addition, the architect is still routinely presented as a unique genius in today's architectural culture. Lara Schrijver shows in 'Women in Architecture', using historical examples, that reality is essentially polyphonic. This ambiguity should form the ground of architectural practice, where making room for different perspectives and trying to understand the other is the starting point.

Reality is multi-voiced; this ambiguity should be the ground of architectural practice.

The Flemish Government is looking for a new Flemish Government Architect. This position has never been filled by a woman in its 26-year history. BOOK CLUB
PAF Bookclub: all about love
01.04.2025 | 20.00u | Stadsform Antwerp

At the beginning of April, the book club of platform voor architectuur & feminisme (PAF) delves into Alles over liefde / All about love by bell hooks. The book was published in 1999, but it was only recently translated into Dutch by Jenny Mijnhijmer. All about love invites the reader to see love not just as a romantic feeling but as a conscious act of connection and responsibility. Are you reading along?

To begin by always thinking of love as an action rather than a feeling is one way in which anyone using the word in this manner automatically assumes accountability and responsibility.

No prior knowledge is required. PAF provides an open and welcoming atmosphere where every voice is welcome.

BOOK
Modernist Women Interior Designers and Artists

This book further explores the conference with the same name held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation on March 7 and 8, 2024, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

A lack of (self-)recognition, shaped by cultural and socioeconomic contexts, made it difficult for women during Modernism to establish themselves in a male-dominated field that often marginalized their contributions. The ephemeral nature of interior architecture and its collaborative aspects, frequently overshadowed by male partners, further contributed to this marginalization. This book brings female protagonists from around the world out of obscurity, highlighting their indispensable roles and advocating for diverse narratives that challenge systemic conventions, sexism, and inequality. It also calls for further research into the contexts in which their work was showcased, questioning professional practices, identifying “invisible creators,” and addressing the complexities of entitlement and authorship.
