David Chipperfield zal de 13de Internationale Architectuurbiënnale van Venetië cureren. De biënnale vindt plaats van 29 augustus tot en met 25 november 2012. Chipperfield ontving eerder dit jaar de Mies Van Der Rohe Award voor de renovatie van het Neues Museum in Berlijn.
David Chipperfield, geboren in Londen in 1953, studeerde aan de Kingston School of Art en de Architectural Association. Voor hij David Chipperfield Architects oprichtte in 1985, werkte hij onder meer voor Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers en Norman Foster. Hij mocht reeds verscheidene titels in ontvangst nemen waaronder Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2004), Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (2007) en Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2009). In België staat Chipperfield in voor de derde en vierde toren op de Westkaai in Antwerpen. Hij ontwierp ook het Neues Museum in Berlijn en kreeg daarvoor de Mies Van Der Rohe Award.

David Chipperfield is to be named as the curator of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. The decision was delayed amid uncertainty over the future of the event’s director. The Portuguese architect and 2010 Pritzker Prize winner, Eduardo Souto de Moura had also been considered for the job, which involves curating two huge group shows, one in the former rope works of the Arsenale and the other in the nearby Giardini.
The decision was welcomed by Alex de Rijke, the newly appointed dean of architecture at the RCA. “Someone of his intellectual calibre will rise to the challenge,” he said. “He’s not going to use it as an opportunity to promote his own architecture. He is going to frame an issue, treat it as research and ask people to contribute.”Once his appointment is made official, Chipperfield will have just eight months to come up with a theme, and curate the world’s largest architecture exhibition. Chipperfield, whose extension to Venice’s San Michele cemetery is ongoing, becomes the third British curator following Deyan Sudjic in 2002 and Ricky Burdett in 2006, but the first British architect to curate the event.
