Exhibition
In October and November master students of the Hasselt University take part in the workshop Forêt DesCartes inspired by the working method of architect Christian Kieckens. The result can be seen in a small exhibition in De Singel.
Forêt DesCartes is the re-enactment of Christian Kieckens' design and teaching practices and a tribute to his memory on the occasion of the opening of the Christian Kieckens Kabinet, Kieckens' personal library which will be available for consultation in a dedicated reading room of the De Singel starting from 21 November 2023. Forêt DesCartes is a workshop, a seminar and a small exhibition, and is a collaborative experiment between several institutions: the VAi, the Z33, the University of Hasselt and the European research network TACK Communities of Tacit Knowledge.
By means of a weekly correspondence exchange, a group of master students of Hasselt University will collect the visual and textual references adopted during their design process. The final result will be a map of contemporary design imaginary and of its main theoretical themes, allowing to trace its migrations and to identify possible lines of continuity and discontinuity within Belgian architecture and the broader European and international context.
At the beginning of November, a 2-day seminar in Hasselt will be the occasion to sift and assemble the collected materials but also to evaluate and discuss the results of the experiment in a choral way together with the students and with the representatives of the different institutions involved. The workshop will result in an exhibition shown at De Singel.
Belgian architect Christian Kieckens passed away on 11 May 2020 in Brussels. The Flanders Architecture Institute, that manages both its archive and its library, will open a permanent exhibition and study in November as a tribute to Christian's efforts to enlarge the visibility of architecture from Flanders.
