For the final and most comprehensive phase of the renovation of a Ghent town house, the client called upon the services of MARCEL. During this phase the architects tackled the annexe, which was of extremely poor quality. A new building created an interesting interface between the various living spaces, kitchen and city garden. The plan was designed in several stages. The first stage involved the division of the available garden space into four equal parts, with their own specific height and function (kitchen, terrace, herb box and play area). The plan was then rotated around its centre in order to achieve the best orientation. Finally, one of the lines was diverted to an existing garden shed to safeguard access to it. In order to enhance the relationship between the various living spaces, kitchen and city garden, the architects extended the interior space of the existing house into the city garden by integrating a red polished concrete plinth, which creates a seamless link from the kitchen to the terrace.
