Join us on June 7 to discover the winners of the very first Architectuur Prijs Vlaanderen (Flanders Architecture Prize) during a festive evening at De Bijloke. Together with architects, clients, users and architecture enthusiasts, we will celebrate the power of design and announce this year’s winners.
From a shortlist of twenty projects, our public jury will award five category prizes. They will select one winner per category. In addition, the expert jury will award one project with an overall prize, spanning all categories. Six prizes, six compelling stories that demonstrate how architecture is making a difference today.
The expert jury brings together three leading voices from the architectural profession, who will select a single overall winner. Their assessment combines design quality, social relevance and forward-thinking.
The expert jury consists of:
_ Véronique Claessens (Flemish Government Architect), who is committed to sustainable urban development and high-quality urbanisation in Flanders,
_ Mechthild Stuhlmacher (Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architects), with a strong focus on repurposing and public functions,
_ Sumayya Vally (Counterspace), internationally renowned for her research into hybrid identities and her socially engaged design practice.
The public jury brings a fresh and user-focused perspective to the entries. Five jury members, selected via an open call, represent a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
The public jury consists of:
_ Jennifer Lys Karell Izere, visual artist focusing on memory and rituals,
_ Roeland Philippe, mathematician with experience in the financial sector,
_ Kathleen Boel, anthropologist and researcher of ceramic door handles,
_ Remco Kerkhof, an accounts assistant and tutor,
_ Ruth Kindt, a heritage officer and PhD student specialising in colonial history.
Together, both juries offer a multifaceted perspective on architecture: from expert insight to everyday experience.
The trophy itself also tells a remarkable story. Designer Bram Vanderbeke has created a series of six unique objects that together form a single whole.
His design pays a subtle tribute to Victor Horta’s iconic Hôtel Aubecq, thereby bridging the gap between contemporary architecture and our rich heritage.
