Scenographies have played an important role in FELT's first decade of practice. The Flanders Architecture Institute and FELT therefore made a book about this common thread in their development. From there, the question also arises more broadly: How does exhibition design relate to (young) architectural practice?
Over the past decade, scenography has been a fundamental part of FELT’s design practice. Understood here as exhibition designs, this type of commission has been a space of particular importance to try out and refine design ideas; where architectural scale meets the levity of smaller-scale design. At about one scenography per year, they have informed the breadth of FELT’s work, ranging from furniture design to representative urban architecture.
Ten Scenographies. A Matter of Architecture features ten scenographies by FELT, evoking their visitor’s experience at the time. Interwoven are reflections on scenography within the development of the office (FELT), dialogues between scenography and architecture (Job Floris and Caroline Voet) and FELT’s work against the broader tradition of exhibition design (Alice Haddad). A conversation with clients and curators (Anne Bambynek, Sofie De Caigny, Katrien Laporte and Jan Van der Stock) provides insight into FELT’s approach and the landscape of exhibition institutions and venues
With their design for the exhibition As Found, Felt rescaled the exhibition space of De Singel in a unique and inventive way.
FELT architecture & design was founded in 2014 by Jasper Stevens and Karel Verstraeten. They joined forces after winning the Interieur Award for their ‘Behind the Curtain’ project. In the same year, the agency won an Open Call for a primary school in Zarren. Over the years, FELT's work has gained much recognition with publications at home and abroad, and the architects are regularly invited to participate in international competitions. Most recently, they received the Architect's ARC20 Young Talent Award in 2020. Both Jasper and Karel are regularly invited as lecture speakers and judges. From 2025, FELT will start teaching at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture.
