The VAi and PAF (Platform for Architecture & Feminism) are organizing a series of four roundtable discussions to coincide with the exhibition Unfolding the Archives #9 Feminist Perspectives 1980-1990. The exhibition shines a spotlight on the networks surrounding the 1984 symposium Wonen en woonomgeving vanuit vrouwen bekeken [Housing and the living environment from a women’s perspective] and the former Vrouwen en Wonen [Women and Housing] working group. On 8 May, we continue the conversation. This time, Els Huigens, Julie Van Garsse, Esra Aktan, and Lena Verlooy reflect on the theme of public space.
In a series of morning sessions, Evelien Pieters (PAF) enters into conversation with feminist voices from the 1980s–1990s as well as with contemporary designers, researchers, and activists. The discussions start from archival materials, experiences, and practices. Rather than looking back, they extend feminist thinking and doing in architecture and the built environment. The roundtable discussions are moments of encounter and reflection, serving as a way to build a living memory on which new design practices can continue to grow.
How can we create a truly inclusive public space? This session examines public space from a feminist perspective, linking social safety to themes such as accessibility, care, and the right to be present.
We compare tools from the archives with current practices. Els Huigens discusses the ‘social safety checklists’ she developed in the 1990s on behalf of Minister Miet Smet. Julie Van Garsse, director of ZIJkant, demonstrates how girls are claiming their place today through the Girls Make The City project. Anthropologist Esra Aktan and researcher Lena Verlooy contribute to the dialogue. Based on their research in Rotterdam and Antwerp North, they focus on the experiences of women with a migrant background.
Els Huigens (b. 1954), a landscape architect and urban planner, lectured on public space at various women’s shelters in the 1990s, particularly in Roeselare. She also developed ‘social safety checklists’ for Miet Smet, then Minister of Employment and Labour, and responsible for Equal Opportunities Policy: how do you make a station safe? A social housing estate? A street or a square? This commitment ultimately took shape in her design agency, Fris in ’t Landschap.
Julie Van Garsse is director of the progressive women’s movement ZIJkant. From a feminist and socially engaged perspective, she advocates for equal access to economic and political power and to public space. Through projects such as Girls Make The City, she works to rethink the city by enabling girls and women to claim their place.
Esra Aktan is a recently graduated anthropologist who returned to the neighbourhood where she has lived for twenty-five years to conduct her master’s research. In Rotterdam’s Oude Westen district, she used walking interviews and ethnographic fieldwork to analyse how women with a migrant background navigate their sense of safety and belonging in the public space. Her research critically examines the gap between institutional policy and the complex realities of everyday life.
Lena Verlooy is a doctoral researcher at Ghent University and holds a master’s degree in Urban Design and Spatial Planning. In her master’s thesis (2023), she conducted action research into the urban experiences of women with a migrant background in Antwerp North. In addition to her academic work, she is a member of the Ghent University Feminist Collective, which advocates for a more feminist university.
