What if the ground beneath our feet was the future of architecture? TOUCHER TERRE invites us on a journey into raw earth construction, a practice as old as civilization. From the clay walls of Mesopotamia to today’s participatory workshops, the film by Jérémie Basset explores how a handful of soil, mixed with straw and water, can become shelter, beauty, and resilience. Through the voices of archaeologists, scientists, and architects, we rediscover earth, its colors, textures, and properties.
The idea behind the movie originates from Romain Anger and Laetitia Fontaine from amàco, l'atelier matières à construire. In the movie we are guided by architects Anna Heringer, Julia Wurst, Arnaud Misse and Philippe Madec, physico-chemist Henri Van Damme, archaeologist Martin Sauvage and artist Sylvie Wheeler. Together, they sketch a vision of architecture that is local, inclusive, and deeply connected to nature. Between science and hands-on practice, between tradition and innovation, TOUCHER TERRE opens a window onto a future built with earth.

The exhibition Tamed Nature, on view at the Flanders Architecture Institute from 17 September onwards, investigates how green urban spaces embody power, history and social tensions. It explores the layered history of urban green space through the lens of the city of Antwerp.

Starting in 2025, De Cinema and the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) will join forces for a unique series of monthly film evenings in De Cinema in Antwerp under the title “Architecture on Film”. Each first Tuesday of the month, this collaboration takes you into the world of architecture and cinema, where buildings become characters, cities set the stage, and design shapes the stories. Films are always screened in their original language with English subtitles, and introductions are in English. For those seeking a second chance: the films will be re-screened without an introduction on the third Tuesday of the month.
The series kicks off in January and February 2025 with the theme “Living Together”, focusing on collective living and architecture’s social engagement. As from March, the focus shifts to the female perspective and diversity in architecture.
