'Ways of Seeing' is an experiential installation that invites you to reflect on how we look at things today: the role of artificial intelligence, the hidden assumptions behind classifications, and the ways technology and imagination shape one another.
In this tenth edition of Unfolding the Archives, we take a fresh look at three photo collections by architects from the Flanders Architecture Institute. In Ways of Seeing, we present images from the archives of Georges Baines, Christian Kieckens and Lou Jansen. Georges Baines extensively photographed the various stages of the restoration of the Maison Guiette (Le Corbusier). Christian Kieckens incorporated images as a form of visual reflection into his teaching practice, whilst Lou Jansen documented the built environment during his travels, including to the Belgian Congo.
Using these collections of photographs, we explore how meaning is created. In doing so, we look at who is looking and what is being seen. We’ll introduce you to the original photographs, automatic image labels and stories that bring the images to life in new ways.
With this installation, we explore how artificial intelligence is changing the way we view images from the past. We also examine the role that narratives and fiction can play in helping us to better understand archives, and how image captions and stories sometimes reinforce one another and sometimes create tension between them.
