The Corner House project is set within the context of a historic monastery farm. A wall, the ruin of a former church and two residential wings surround a square courtyard. The north and east wings previously used to interconnect but became detached from each other following a fire. The client’s instructions were to design a connection between the two wings at this location. Gijs Van Vaerenbergh was trying to find a solution that complied with the client’s requirements and respected the special historic context of the site. The project was meant to stand out with regard to this heritage by referring in a radically contemporary way to the historic situation that existed before the fire. The result is a small building, which opens up towards the woods outside and is covered with mirrors in the courtyard garden, evoking the historical connection.
