Plein Publiek

Thomas Wijnen and Yves Schellekens have transformed the ground floor and courtyard of the vacant Fierensblokken, a modernist complex in Antwerp dating back to 1939, into a vibrant event location. Together, the glass roof of the conservatory and magical night-time lighting invite visitors to look up. Both the design and the contemporary character of the concept are striking. Plein Publiek tackles the prevailing shortage of space as well as the surplus of unused space in cities. Temporary solutions are currently a popular option. The focus is on the 'now' and our experience of it, rather than on building for eternity. The ground floor and shops along the street were put at the disposal of up-and-coming talent and provided space for the Café Congé pop-up restaurant. The courtyard is used for performances, workshops and lectures.
