Wim Cuyvers, the architect who initially won the project, works on his designs on the basis of a poetic and existential philosophy. His young companions build on this, but not on the basis of the philosophy, which of course is his alone. They opt, rather, for beauty, and perhaps more for magic, as in the cabinets with the ladder. Cuyvers, conducting the performance from France, increasingly loosens his hold. In this way they retain the eclecticism but without the existential layer. The client did not go for existentialism either. He wanted a building that would tell stories.
