For this architect’s house on a vacant corner plot, Poot Architectuur designed a straightforward brick volume that rises slightly above the neighbouring houses. With its sizeable dimensions, the house functions as a beacon on the street corner. Its materiality references the area’s industrial architecture. The lack of a garden resulted in an inversion of the typology of a house. The night quarters are positioned on the lower floors, while the living area is positioned on the upper floors, closer to the roof terraces. The floors are stepped around the staircase, leading up to the equally stepped roof terrace. The clever plan and height difference between the storeys results in an interior that unfolds steadily behind the tougher and more rigid façades.

This project is part of the exhibition Composite Presence in the Belgian pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
Poot Architectuur: "The project is a corner house in the city of Antwerp that was built on a kite-shaped plot of 78 square meters. A corner house will always somewhat have the character of a tower where the wide view and different orientations are characteristic. The typology refers to old factory buildings in this former industrial neighbourhood. This compact townhouse feels spacious despite its small size, due to the different ceiling heights, changing views and perspectives through the building."
