PAUL FELIX & BOVENBOUW ARCHITECTUUR - DWORP

Vormingscentrum Destelheide

The Destelheide training centre is located on a hillside in the Zevenbronbeek valley. The building complex, designed by Paul Felix, is based on brutalist architecture. These particularly practical buildings, which were constructed between 1964 and 1971, still provide an inspiring and stimulating background for artistic and creative development. Under the management of the Algemene Dienst voor Jeugdtoerisme (General Agency for Youth Tourism), it is a ‘biotope’ that furnishes the infrastructure, space and time for artistic development.

Each building has a specific function, appearance and place within the overall experience. The cluster of concrete sculptures is incorporated into the hillside in a linear formation and enhances the impact of the topography on the design. Each building specifically faces south, intensifying the link with the valley. The natural environment actually connects the different pavilions. The solemn, clear-cut concrete spaces act in symbiosis with the surrounding nature. The staging is respectful and makes the design accessible. The service buildings added by Bovenbouw continue in line with the original concept. Concrete is given a genuine appeal by stacking concrete Lego bricks. The stacking pattern determines the relief effect and appearance of the structure. It creates two brutalist, primary structures enhanced with vegetation. This sustainable integration within the landscape brings nature and culture together.

This project was opened on the occasion of the 2017 Day of Architecture.
