An unassuming new building now accommodates the De Bonte Was youth centre, because the old pavilion in Wasstraat was due for replacement. Architects Bart Dehaene opted to position a simple and compact structure at the centre of the site with everything on one level. Around a central space that provides access, the designers have spread the various hubs maintaining a balanced and nuanced approach. These core hubs comprise the necessary facilities (toilets, storage, office, kitchen and reception areas) and introduce structure into the spaces between them. The large interior spaces (a play library, multifunctional spaces for children and teenagers) are positioned in unoccupied corners. They are acoustically separated by the core hubs, which act as a buffer. The building concept is based on sustainability and on 'social innovation', focusing on interactions between people. It serves as a basis and lever for the upgrading of the living environment.
