Architecture Workroom Brussels verandert al een paar jaar van adres, organiseert projecttrajecten om ruimtes aan te passen aan hun eigenaardige praktijk. Momenteel huren ze een hele verdieping anonieme ruimtes aan de Pachecolaan. We waren geïnteresseerd in het project vanwege de binaire identiteit van de Workroom: een ruimte die tegelijk privé en publiek is, een kantoor als ruimte voor dialoog en tentoonstellingen - of omgekeerd.
In het stadium van de kleine selectieronde stelden we een strategie voor om alle interventies zelf uit te voeren: in wezen een Design & Build-onderneming die in staat is om nauwkeurige mock-ups en kostenramingen te produceren. Anton Parys trad op als ontwerpadviseur en voerde later alle houten en metalen elementen uit. Textiel kon direct door Specs worden geproduceerd.
Met een beperkt budget richtten we ons op drie interventieniveaus:
De ruimte indelen
AWB verplaatste de houten panelen die Laura Muyldermans voor hun vorige locatie had ontworpen naar deze nieuwe ruimte. Afwezig van de opdracht, deed onze uitgebreide aanwezigheid in de Workroom ons het cruciale belang van de opslagruimte beseffen om de snelle veranderingen van openbaarheid op te vangen. Een eerste - gratis - ingreep was het veranderen van hun plaatsing om vrij uitzicht op de stad, licht en opslag te garanderen.
Facilitators installeren
Een beperkte reeks precieze elementen (de dubbele deur, de piano, 4 zware tafels, 50 presentatiekoffers) bemiddelen verder de meervoudige identiteiten van de Workroom. Ze voldoen aan de basisbehoeften voor parallelle programmering, catering, dringende akoestische grenzen, ateliermeubilair of presentatieondersteuning - en zijn altijd een potentiële scenografie die schaal zoekt door middel van assemblages.
Een schaal voor het extra(-gewone)
Twee loodrechte assen van modulaire - blauwe en rode - gordijnen matigen de dagelijkse verschuivingen tussen het publieke karakter van de Workroom. Ze variëren de intimiteit en schaal van vele dialogen, die soms samenkomen om grootse momenten te creëren - waardoor de gewone privéverdieping verandert in een buitengewone openbare ruimte.

For a few years already, Architecture Workroom Brussels has been changing addresses, organizing project trajectories to adapt spaces to their peculiar practice. They currently rent a whole floor of anonymous spaces on the Pachecolaan. We were interested in the project because of the binary identity of the Workroom: a space at once private and public, an office as a space for dialogue and exhibitions – or vice-versa.
At the stage of the small selection round, we proposed a strategy to carry out all interventions by ourselves: essentially a Design & Build endeavor capable of producing accurate mock-ups and cost estimations. Anton Parys acted as design consultant, later executing all wood and metal elements. Textiles could be produced directly by Specs.
With limited budget at hand, we focused on three levels of intervention:
Arranging the room
AWB moved the wooden panels designed by Laura Muyldermans for their previous location into this new space. Absents from the brief, our extensive presence in the Workroom made us realize the crucial importance of storages in accommodating the swift changes of publicness. A first – free – intervention was to change their placement to guarantee unobstructed views towards the city, light and storage.
Installing facilitators
A limited set of precise elements (the Double Door, the Piano, 4 Heavy Tables, 50 Presentation Valises) further mediate the multiple identities of the Workroom. They fulfill basic needs for parallel programming, catering, urgent acoustic limits, atelier furniture or presentation support – always doubling as a potential scenography that searches for scale by assemblages.
A scale for the extra(-ordinary)
Two perpendicular axes of modular – blue and red – curtains moderate daily shifts between the Workroom’s public character. They gradate the intimacy and scale of many dialogues, sometimes coming together to create grand moments – transforming the ordinary private floor into an extra-ordinary public space.
