Working within the boundaries of the rigid organisation of city and regional buses, URA aimed to introduce a degree of autonomy into a project for the station in Bruges in which a row of shelters had to become a comfortable waiting area for passengers. Moving away from the standard bus stops in use across the rest of Flanders, the steel structures reflect a desire for self-awareness and recognition amongst passengers. Whereas the structures are rather abstract in terms of choice of materials and detailing, their specific design introduces a clear sense of unity and readability into the square. At the centre of the curved enclosure of light blue shelters, the architects have incorporated a number of sleek white shelters stripped of any detail. URA's design aims to make a significant contribution to the quality of the waiting area in this public space. No matter how short the stay, it is meant to be a moment of experience and brief intimacy.
