Parkbosbruggen

The Parkbosbruggen in Zwijnaarde, the second longest cycle bridges in Flanders, were used for the first time in May 2018. The bridges cross the R4, Ringvaart and E40. They provide walkers, cyclists, runners and nature lovers with a safe crossing to neighbouring municipalities. This connection provides and promotes sustainable options for school and work commuters, giving them a magnificent view of Parkbos, one of the four green zones around the city of Ghent. Bureau Greisch won the Open Call issued by the Flemish Government Architect with their design of the approximately 5 km long railway cycle route. The Greisch concept is based on an inviting, open bridge structure with a sober, sleek and elegant appeal. These key criteria are an integral part of the design, which ensures that the bridge, with its V-shaped bridge pillars, does not grab too much attention but blends in nicely with the green surroundings. The interface between prefabricated concrete elements and a steel structure and the natural environment also refers to the shipping function of the Ringvaart, which the bridge also crosses. The architects have emphasized this using subtle line lighting that acts as a visual beacon at night.

This project was opened on the occasion of the 2019 Day of Architecture. The text is based on a contribution by Ama Verdonckt.
