Sportcentrum De Boerekreek

A low, L-shaped volume curves alongside a bend in an asphalt road, with two wings composed of repeating trusses in grey-stained wood. One colonnade, with intervals of 3.6 metres, contains a boathouse, changing rooms and eighty small bedrooms.
The two colonnades meet at the corner of the flat L-shape where the interval between the columns shrinks to 1 metre. Here, under the shelter of 53 identical portal frames lie a catering kitchen, a multipurpose room and the communal toilets, side by side. Between both wings the entrance portal opens up towards the street.
From the outside it looks like a sturdy piece of origami or a grey dozing humpback whale that raises its torso towards the surroundings. On the inside however it hides a supple machinery of gracious beams. A blackpainted ribcage that holds the skin of the building in shape like a mass of leaf springs.
