The Flanders Architecture Institute and deSingel will pay homage to architect Juliaan Lampens (1926 - 2019) on Saturday 14 December.
Juliaan Lampens passed away on 5 November 2019. Like no one else, he believed in the artistic value of architecture and in architecture as an expression of spirit. A homage to this inspirational figure will take place on Saturday 14 December at deSingel in Antwerp. Personal testimonials will highlight the significance of his oeuvre and his impact as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Campus Sint-Lucas in Ghent.
When deSingel organised a Juliaan Lampens retrospective in 1991, his fame increased exponentially. This resulted, amongst other things, in the 1995 Award for Belgian Architecture. The jury described his work in the following terms: ‘truth, authenticity, intensity, spirituality, depth, completeness, clarity, timelessness, spatiality.’
A monograph was published in 2010, introducing Lampens’ oeuvre to a specialized audience. This marked his international breakthrough, with his architecture soon being labelled as ‘brutalism’.
The general public became acquainted with Juliaan Lampens in 2014, when the renowned architecture magazine A + U dedicated a themed issue to the Belgian architect.
