‘The profit of not-building’ is a research proposal that adresses the question of Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie (NL) to associate social and economical development with architecture, urban planning and other spatial interventions. During this first symposium RE-ST launches the research-subject regarding not-building as development strategy, in collaboration with ArcK (University Hasselt), Topotronic and Fakton. Reason for the research project is on one hand the financial crisis that prevails in the Netherlands and on the other the spatial crisis that dominates Flemish land use. Both contexts urge architects and urban planners to focus on the existing patrimony. New building no longer generates the obvious solution and focus shifts towards spatial management. How can Flanders and the Netherlands learn from each other on this topic? During the symposium the research proposal will be presented to a reflection panel consisting of Filip Canfyn, Bernard Colenbrander, Hans Leinfelder and Iris Schutten.
