The exhibition Variete / architecture / desire features key works of the Ghent based architecture firm with models and drawings produced at a workshop that took place at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in the spring of 2019.
Together with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the architects set up research into the similarities and differences in the Japanese and Flemish approach to architecture.
They set up a design study; but instead of re-search they named it re-practice. Projects by de vylder vinck tallieu were modelled and reinterpreted in a new context.
For the duration of the exhibition in Tokyo, three other international design studios each work on eleven projects by designers from Flanders and Brussels, which again will culminate in mirror images in three different contexts.
On 13 September Jo Taillieu, Jan De Vylder (architecten de vylder vinck taillieu) and Sofie De Caigny (director Flanders Architecture Institute) give a lecture at the Toto Gallery about the exhibition and the relationship between architecture from Flanders and Japan.
In Spring 2020, the Flanders Architecture Institute will be focusing on the link between architecture from Japan and projects from Flanders and Brussels. The exhibition RE-PRACTICE RE-VISIT RE-TURN will display the intensive design study carried out by the students in Tokyo: eleven original projects by de vylder vinck tallieu are imbued with fresh meaning in a Japanese context, like eleven Japanese mirror images.
