In 2023, the French Community curates the Belgian pavilion for the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale. The multidisciplinary curatorial team includes the architectural collective Bento and the philosopher and psychologist Vinciane Despret.
The curatorial concept for In vivo stems from the team’s shared reflections on construction sustainability and places the emphasis on experimentation with living matter.
Given that the construction industry is one of the most polluting sectors, the team advocates action over analysis. By using what already exists – living matter – they strive for a more hopeful future. Through working with local materials and generating environment-specific activities, they question the current production system. The scenography is a large-scale experiment with living materials, such as raw earth from excavated building sites, and presents Belgian production channels and projects that, likewise, ‘revalue local raw materials for the manufacture of the territory’.
