The Italian magazine Casabella publishes a
thematic issue on Belgian architecture. (nr 956-960 / July
August). The editors are Nicola Braghieri (EPFL Lausanne) and Filippo Cattapan. They made a selection of 36 buildings, mainly in
Flanders and Brussels. The issue also includes an interview with Sofie De
Caigny (former director VAi) and Dirk Somers (Bovenbouw). On a double page a selection of postcards by Christian
Kieckens and Marc Dubois is inlculded. Also two pages a selection of 24 buildings, from the
Volkshuis in Brussels by Horta to the crematorium in Ostend by OFFICE. Finally,
there are 18 pages on the house of Gaston Eysselinck in Ghent.
We imagine that «Casabella» 959-960, July-August 2024, will surprise readers. Edited by Nicola Braghieri with Filippo Cattapan, this issue of the magazine is monographic and proposes several Promenades dans la België, documenting what Belgian architects have built in their country in recent years, dealing, above all, with residences in both urban and suburban environments, giving rise to a sort of shared rhetoric of the everyday life.
It is not possible here to mention all the authors of the works presented in this issue of «Casabella», because the buildings selected are thirty-six. The panorama they offer is introduced by two essays by Braghieri and Cattapan which explain the singularity of the ways in which Belgian architects carry out their profession, the causes of which are discussed at the beginning of the issue by Dirk Somers and Sofie De Caigny together with Braghieri and Cattapan themselves. «Casabella» 959-960 is concluded by a profusely illustrated text by Marc Dubois presenting a seminal work from 1930-32, the house that Gaston Eysselinck built for himself in Ghent, paving the way for the affirmation of “functional architecture” in his country, so different from the ones Belgian architects now seem intent on pursuing. No less than for its unusual architecture, «Casabella» 959-960 should also strike readers with its graphic choices and the numerous, unobvious images selected to illustrate the essays that introduce the issue.
«Casabella» is available in print version and and in digital version.
