The past three decades were extraordinary years for architecture in Flanders. The buildings, squares and cityscapes that were built were more than functional, they gave our cities a new lease of life. The exhibition The Wonder Years focuses on projects of architects that have helped shape Flemish architecture since the Eighties. The exhibition brings this important period to life with images and scale models that appeal to the visitor’s imagination. The selected projects are key interventions in a specific type of building including public buildings, dwellings, offices and so on.

The breakthrough of Flemish architecture would not have been possible without the ability of designers and their clients to convince others. The contrast with the grey years of the past is striking. Policy-makers noticed the work of these decisive pioneers. The tipping point came around the turn of the century when the position of the Flemish Government Architect was created. This review of the wonder years shows that the current international success of architects from Flanders and Brussels is the outcome of a visionary and unshakeable commitment.
