During the conference icam18 in 2016 in Ljubljana Christoph Grafe (director Flanders Architecture Institute) will talk about the exhibition series PROJECTIONS.
Over the past two decades many schools of architecture have engaged in research by design, both as a reflexive practice and addressing concrete problems of urban planning and building. The exhibition series PROJECTIONS of the Flanders Architecture Institute has been set up to provide a platform for this type of research that has been executed in the architecture schools in Flanders and Brussels. In the period 2014 – 2016 eight exhibitions were devoted to a range of research topics ranging from innovative urban planning solutions to formal-aesthetic architectural problems.
The exhibition format offers the opportunity to present provisional results of this type of research and to foster the public debate in wider communities and civil society. To this end each exhibition is always combined with a variety of public events, including roundtable discussions, guided tours and lectures, which complement the visual material (plans, drawings etc.) and increase its accessibility for a non-professional audience.
Although the range of the topics has been broad, this particular exhibition format seems particularly suitable for visualising and addressing architectural problems with a clearly identified societal impact. The presentation at the ICAM conference will discuss some of these research projects, examining for instance new typologies for manufacturing in urban contexts or underused suburban/rural environments, discussing both suitable forms of presentation and the potential as well as the limitations of the exhibition format.
