On the occasion of the exhibition MAATWERK MASSARBEIT. Custom Made Architecture from Flanders and the Netherlands in Frankfurt, the Flanders Architecture Institute, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum present the Frankfurt Dialogues debate series. Dutch and Flemish architects will discuss their shared convictions about craftsmanship, customisation and spatial quality, despite their divergent cultural and historical conditions.
Frankfurt Dialogue 1: Limitless Customisation
Although for some, terms such as ‘ugly’ and ‘messy’ still typify architecture in Flanders, a different, more poetic image has prevailed over the past few years. Moreover, this new stream of architects is characterised by defined architectonic craftsmanship and a strong focus on spatial quality, which also resonate on the Dutch side of the border. This evening event will explore the surprising rapprochement between Dutch and Flemish architects, given the differences in architectural climate and history, and in spatial and cultural context.
