De Korenbloem in Kortrijk is one of the finalists for the prestigious New European Bauhaus Prize. This prize puts the spotlight on remarkable projects that bring sustainability, inclusiveness and beauty together in an innovative and exemplary manner. The prize, awarded annually by the European Commission, rewards projects that bring the values and core ideas of the European Green Deal closer to people and local communities.
This week, the 52 finalists were announced in 4 different categories. Noteworthy is that De Korenbloem in Kortrijk was the only Belgian architectural project to be nominated in the category ‘Prioritising the places and people that need it the most’. The project was chosen by a panel of independent experts from more than 1100 European submissions.
The winners will be announced during the New European Bauhaus Festival that will take place in Brussels from 9 to 12 June 2022.
De Korenbloem is one of the five Care Pilot Projects, an initiative by the Flemish Ministry of Welfare and the Vlaams Bouwmeester that combines new care concepts with innovative spatial models. The project offers new residential models for young people with early onset dementia and elderly people with stroke-related disabilities and somatic symptom disorder. In addition, it attempts to break down barriers between 'care' and society by organising new ways of providing care and opening up two renovated historic villas for neighbourhood activities and associations.
The design of the project, commissioned by VZW De Korenbloem, is the result of a unique international collaboration between the Belgian architectural firm Studio Jan Vermeulen ism. Tom Thys Architects, on the one hand, and the British architectural firm Sergison Bates Architects, on the other, who together developed a master plan for this site in Kortrijk and then each worked out a subproject.
De Korenbloem now has a chance of winning one of the two prizes in its category. In addition, the project also has a chance of winning a public prize. This prize will be determined by a public vote. You can vote for De Korenbloem until 16 May 2022.
