Reflective Cartography: mapping women*’s perspectives in architecture in Flanders

For long, women have been leading, designing and building across Flanders and Brussels. A new map by Women* in Architecture Belgium (W*iAB) highlights these contributions. W*iAB invites project submissions to help build a living, public cartography of women*’s work

Help build the map

Reflective Cartography: Mapping Women*’s Perspectives in Architecture in Flanders is the first comprehensive initiative to map women*’s architectural contributions across the region. Through an interactive online map, it documents buildings, renovations, urban projects, landscapes, objects and many other projects. W*iAB invites the public, through open submissions, to contribute projects and help expand the map.

Reflective Cartography

The project aims to document over 200 projects of diverse scales and contexts, with a focus on work led by women* in partner, principal or comparable leadership roles, as well as historically significant collaborative contributions where their contributions have long remained underrepresented. Submitted projects are integrated into W*iAB’s online platform and the VAi database, ensuring long-term visibility and public access.

Alongside the newly launched map, site visits, public conversations and audio formats will highlight what women* build, and how they shape the built environment through leadership, craftsmanship, collaboration and design thinking.

The project runs from November 2025 until December 2026 and is co-supported by the Government of Flanders under the Kunstendecreet Projectsubsidies programme. With the support and expertise of project partners KU Leuven, PAF, Stad & Architectuur and VAi, and reflection board members L’architecture qui dégenre, Gebouwen door Vrouwen, Part W, Poot Architectuur, She Builds Podcast and Prof. Henriette Steiner and Prof. Svava Riesto at the University of Copenhagen.

Practical

Reflective Cartography builds on earlier W*iAB initiatives such as the Women*’s Cartography in BXL and the 2023 Think Tank.
