In the March issue of the English architecture and design magazine Wallpaper, journalist Harriet Thorpe pays attention to the renovation of a seventies villa by Dirk Engelen of B-architecten. In the April issue of Wallpaper, attention is paid to the guesthouse Alex by Atelier Vens Vanbelle.
Renovation by B-architecten
The house was originally built in 1975 and designed by Belgian architect named Jacky Cuylen. Dirk Engelen (B-architecten) renovated the house not without bringing some architectural abstractions of his own design.
‘Everything was designed from the principle of the circle. Like a piece of cake, every room has straight walls, perpendicular on the circle, and an open view to outside. Most houses in the woods end up being quite dark inside, but here the main floor is the first floor, and the ground floor was just designed for entry – so it’s like a tree house.’

The architects created a sculptural extension in the backyard of a home which serves as guesthouse, screening room and watchtower.
In order to integrate the building into the landscape as much as possible, we opted for a soft shape with rounded corners, which follows the slope of the plot. The outer shell of the abstract container is made of corrugated Corten steel plates. This colour fits in perfectly with the green surroundings, which also enhanced the integration in the garden'.
