The Gjg House by BLAF architects, the Harbour building by Sergison Bates architects and eld and Leietheater by TRANS architectuur stedenbouw & V+ are shortlisted for the UK Brick Awards in the category Worldwide.
In a square floor plan, the programme components of the Leietheater are arranged around a central foyer with a monumental skylight. The foyer can be expanded by sliding the partition wall with the multifunctional hall away. With a café on the corner, the building activates the public domain in a place where otherwise, after the opening hours of the theatre, a pause would arise in the urban dynamic. The large auditorium with its theatre tower gives the building a characteristic silhouette.
Leietheater by TRANS architectuur I stedenbouwThe curved brick shell of the gjG house has multiple motives. First of all the house was to be built on a plot with trees. Instead of cutting the trees, the house was shaped to fit in between them. Secondly, the shape of the shell allows it to be structurally autonomous. Thirdly, the massive shell of the house contributes to the acoustic comfort on the inside.
Gjg House by BLAFThe Antwerp Harbour building establishes a continuous but heterogeneous frontage along the old quay. 72 apartments arranged above commercial spaces, with shared access to the blocks’s central garden courtyard, offer different types of tenure to a diverse, multi-generational community of residents.
The project is also nominated for the Mies Awards 2022.
