40 years of competition

How important are competitions for architects? Why is the open call more than a competition? In the wake of the Coming of Age and Open Call exhibitions, the Flanders Architecture Institute is organizing a public program that examines a number of themes from the 40 years of competition project.

In addition to the exhibitions Coming of Age and Open Call two books were published about architectural competitions and the open call procedure in Flanders and Brussels. On 8 March, Saskia van Stein (director of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam) will discuss both books with the editors and publishers. Before the talk you can join a guided visit to the double exhibition.

The exhibitions Coming of Age and Open Call are almost coming to an end. But that doesn't mean the end of the project 40 years of competition. The team of the Flemish Government Architect in collaboration with the Flanders Architecture Institute and the University of Ghent are planning a series of debates in the upcoming months. The finissage of the exhibitions will be the starting point.

Hasselt-based art center Z33 among finalists Mies Award
16.02.2022

Francesca Torzo’s new exhibition wing for Z33 is one of the five finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022. The building for the Hasselt-based House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture is the only Belgian project that is part of this select group. The winner will be announced at the end of April.

The European Prize for Urban Public Space to be offered again this year

The eleventh European Prize for Urban Public Space (2022) will be offered again this year after the interruption in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s award will cover works carried out between 2018 and 2021. The new call for entries will open on 20 April.
