This summer, it’s architect Joris Kerremans’ turn to participate in Table Setting. In this exhibition series, young designers from Flanders and Brussels present themselves on the forecourt of De Singel, using a set of display tables and accompanying attributes. In Table Setting #2 Kerremans examines the diversity of his practice by presenting it within a series of identical rooms, created in collaboration with visual artist Stan Auwers.
In Table Setting #2, Joris Kerremans and Stan Auwers interpret the tables as rooms to scale. The proportions of the modular exhibition furniture determine nine identical spaces with a distinct direction, while the openings in the side walls imply a scale. Each room occupies one table. Together, they form a small-scale pavilion on the forecourt of De Singel. Because the interiors are visually and mentally accessible at these dimensions, the relationship with the visitor is extremely direct and physical.
The nine rooms form the display framework for an equal number of projects from Kerremans’ portfolio. With their identical dimensions and materialisation, they underline the variation in form and scale within his work. Kerremans and Auwers have created an object or document that highlights a particular aspect of each project, the scale of which is brought into tension with that of the room. In this way, both the rooms and exhibited projects are presented at the viewer’s level.
Joris Kerremans lives and works in Ghent. His projects are like individual characters. They are underpinned by a distinctly open attitude, in which coincidence and intuition play an important role. As a result, surprising fascinations and references emerge during the design process. This quest gives rise to projects that always speak to the visitor or user. In addition to buildings, his practice also focuses on architectural installations, often in collaboration or interaction with the visual arts. With his installations, the architect has contributed to exhibitions such as Open Oproep (various locations in Flanders and Brussels, 2020-2022) and You Are Here
(Brussels, 2018). Kerremans co-founded the Brussels-based office League, where he was a partner from 2019 to 2022. He is also active as an assistant in architectural design at the University of Ghent.
Stan Auwers is a visual artist based in Ghent. His work consists of sculpture, installations, and drawings in which he tries to visualise the epic drama of the banal and give the cowboy a starring role.

Table Setting is the new exhibition series for young architects in Flanders and Brussels of the Flemish Architecture Institute and De Singel. It is the next stage within a tradition of young architecture in De Singel. Established names have found a platform to show their early oeuvre since the 1980s ('Young Architecture in Belgium' in 1988 and '35m³ of young architecture' in 2005). Even today, young architects are challenged to determine their own position in relation to the discipline, complex spatial situations and social issues. The forecourt of De Singel depicts the cacophony in which young architects start their own practice. The multiform boundaries of the asphalt plain form the perfect backdrop for the exhibition series. Every architect who exhibits there has a set of tables with attributes, designed by Laura Muyldermans. The tables are not only an installation in which the designers show their work, but also challenge them to take a spatial position on the forecourt.
