RAAMWERK i.s.m Van Gelder Tilleman, House and Studio, Mariakerke © Stijn Bollaert

RAAMWERK designed a house and studio on a small corner plot in Mariakerke in collaboration with Van Gelder Tilleman. Although the studio and dwelling are separated from each other, they are based on the same design language. An enclosed outdoor space has been created between the two structures as an extension to the studio. The traditional stacking of building materials is striking. Masonry walls support the concrete beams, which in turn support the wooden beams. Daylight filters in between the wooden structure, creating playful illuminations on the reclaimed brick walls. The rhythmic wood structure creates a cornice on the façade, whereas the concrete beams are reminiscent of alternating stone layers. The architects refer to it as 'abstract ornamentation'. The interior spaces are arranged around a central core. This eliminated the need for a traditional corridor, thus creating an informal, free circulation pattern. The rooms are distinguished by the alternating incidence of light, and different outlooks and proportions.

This project was opened on the occasion of the 2017 Day of Architecture.
