In het hart van het dorp, wordt de Heilig Kruiskerk getransformeerd tot een cluster van kinderopvang, buitenspeelruimte en ruimtes voor evenementen, tentoonstellingen en ceremonies.
Om tegemoet te komen aan de eisen qua brandveiligheid en klimatisatie, wordt de kinderopvang als een afgesloten object, in het schip van de kerk geplaatst. Geïnspireerd op het schilderij van Sint-Hiëronymus in zijn studeervertrek, wordt het paviljoen opgetrokken als een amorfe constructie die de aandacht trekt en de bezoeker prikkelt om op onderzoek te gaan. Het is een constructie die uitnodigt om er te verblijven maar ook in, op, rond en door te bewegen. De positie en vorm van het object wordt gekneed naar de structuur van de kerk. De vorm definieert de ruimtes binnenin, maar ook de negatieve ruimte in de kerk. Het paviljoen medieert tussen de kleine schaal van het kind en de bovenmenselijke schaal van de kerk.
De kinderopvang werd opgevat als een aaneenschakeling van binnen- en buitenspeelruimtes, die visueel met elkaar in verbinding staan, voor verschillende groepen en activiteiten. Tussen de kinderopvang en de eventruimte wordt een functioneel doksaal opgetrokken waarin de gedeelde functies (keuken, sanitair, berging) een buffer vormen tussen deze contrasterende functies. In het doksaal vonden we een passend archetype en de sleutel om de nieuwe functies te verzoenen met elkaar en met het gebouw.
De eventruimte krijgt een centrale plek in de kerk en fungeert als schakelruimte. De ruimte kan gebruikt worden in combinatie met de aangrenzende ceremoniële ruimte en tentoonstellingsruimte, maar kan ook op zichzelf fungeren door middel van de gordijnen. De sculpturale trappenpartij overstijgt het louter functionele en fungeert als tribune, zitbank en speeltuig. De tentoonstellingsruimte bovenaan de trappen, is ontworpen als een promenade architecturale. De bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd om op ontdekking te gaan langs verschillende plekken en de kerk vanuit een nieuw perspectief te ervaren.

At the heart of the village, Holy Cross Church will be transformed into a cluster of childcare facilities, outdoor play areas and spaces for events, exhibitions and ceremonies.
To meet fire safety and air-conditioning requirements, the childcare will be placed as an enclosed object, in the nave of the church. Inspired by the painting of St Jerome in his study, the pavilion is raised as an amorphous structure that attracts attention and stimulates visitors to explore. It is a construction that invites one to stay in it but also to move in, on, around and through it. The position and shape of the object is moulded to the structure of the church. The shape defines the spaces inside, but also the negative space inside the church. The pavilion mediates between the small scale of the child and the superhuman scale of the church.
The childcare was conceived as a sequence of indoor and outdoor play areas, visually connected, for different groups and activities. A functional dock hall is erected between the childcare and event space in which shared functions (kitchen, sanitary facilities, storage) form a buffer between these contrasting functions. In the dock hall, we found an appropriate archetype and the key to reconcile the new functions with each other and with the building.
The event space will have a central place in the church and act as a linking space. The space can be used in combination with the adjacent ceremonial room and exhibition space, but can also function on its own through the curtains. The sculptural staircase transcends the purely functional and acts as a grandstand, bench and play area. The exhibition space at the top of the stairs, is designed as a promenade architecturally. Visitors are invited to explore along different places and experience the church from a new perspective.
