KLAARCHITECTUUR - SINT-TRUIDEN

De Waterhond

Klaarchitectuur (architects) is based in an old, listed monument with a long history in the centre of Sint-Truiden. The building originally served as a barn but became a chapel in the 16th century. The Architect Gregory Nijs bought the property after it had been vacant for approximately fifty years and injected new life into it, respecting the original elements. The connection between old and new immediately becomes clear upon entering the building. The architects have created a stack of four boxes connected by an elevator and a contemporary staircase. This is where the offices are located. The new addition is completely separate from the surrounding old building. Where the altar used to be is now a kitchen with a few references to its previous purpose, including a cross-shaped cabinet. Despite the fact that some residents of Sint-Truiden are not familiar with the building, the practice has attracted international attention. Having said that, the city remains their main focus, which is why they have made the entrance space available for workshops or other events.

This project was opened on the occasion of the 2019 Day of Architecture. The text is based on a contribution by Lauren Overlaet.
