Primary school De Brug, located in rural Erpe, consists of small pavilions sited between multifaceted squares and alleys. Despite the homely ambiance of this small unit it gives rise to considerable fragmentation of the landscape. The design incorporates two basic new-build, two storey structures, which retain the spirit of the former pavilions and reorganise the site in an uncomplicated manner. Placing the two main structures more or less at the centre of the site and allowing them to shift vis-à-vis one another, creates a degree of tension which defines a new centre. The canopies on the central strip barely touch the building and facilitate a smooth link between the two main structures. This interconnected space appears to float not only between the village and the landscape, but also between the different users of the school, which acts as a mediator with respect to both the residential core and the green surroundings.
